MMF4: The Next Generation of Non-Magnet-track Linear Motion

The MMF4 series is the latest generation of magnet-free track linear motors from Motion Control Products. It builds on the proven MMF3 platform with enhanced performance, higher efficiency, and improved system reliability. Unlike conventional linear motors with permanent magnets embedded in the track (stator), the MMF4 design removes all magnets from the track, relocating them to the moving forcer. This eliminates magnetic attraction in the platen, improves handling safety and significantly reduces rare-earth material usage, which particularly is beneficial in long-travel applications.

Operating Principle

MMF4 motors retain the fundamental principles of electromagnetic theory but incorporate advanced magnetic field modulation technology. Using a self-modulated ferrite alloy stator and a uniquely shaped magnetic circuit, the MMF4 motor modulates low-frequency magnetic fields into higher frequencies. The forcer houses both the magnets and coils in a compact assembly, generating thrust through the interaction between the moving magnetic field and the non-magnetic stator structure.

This design provides smoother motion, lower cogging force, and excellent efficiency without the drawbacks of magnetic attraction in the platen.

MMF4 Key Features and Benefits

Low Electromagnetic Interference

Minimal electromagnetic interference makes MMF4 suitable for sensitive applications. The integrated forcer design with high-resolution encoders ensures excellent positioning accuracy for demanding automation tasks.

Enhanced Safety and Handling

With no magnets in the stator, the MMF4 eliminates magnetic hazards during assembly and maintenance. Operators can handle the motor safely, with no risk of interference from magnetic fields.

Longer Lifespan & Less Maintenance

The absence of magnets prevents the accumulation of metallic particles on the track. This reduces wear on the motor and guide rails, minimises unplanned downtime, and ensures long-term reliable operation.

Smoother Operation with Reduced Cogging

Cogging force is minimised through two core technologies: Magnetic Field Modulation and Electromagnetic Field Optimisation. As a result, MMF4 delivers smooth and precise linear motion with high repeatability.

High Performance and Energy Efficiency

Magnetic field modulation reduces the number of coil turns by 50%, lowering copper loss by 67% and total electromagnetic loss by 30%. This ensures consistent performance and energy savings over long travel distances.

Lower Magnetic Attraction for Better System Reliability

By reducing the magnetic flux density in the excitation field, the MMF4 minimises Maxwell forces between the stator and moving parts. This decreases stress on guide rails and improves overall system reliability.
